5MFSN - is Sarah Palin One of Us?

.
5 Minutes For Special Needs

I've been guest blogging over on 5 Minutes for Special Needs again, this time dabbling in American Politics and whether parents of children with Down Syndrome, or any form of special need, are pro-life or pro-choice, evolutionists or creationists, pro-gun lobby or anti-gun lobby, enjoy apple pie or despise apple pie, need glasses or have 20-20 vision, shave their legs and armpits or go au naturale.

If you have a couple of minutes to spare, do pop across to read
Is Sarah Palin One of Us?

well said, sugar! it seems all y'all have a better handle on how our political system should work than most americans! and more's the pity! sadly, we will get the government we deserve because of our indifference and ignorance and that is becoming a more and more frightening reality!

(i'm voting for obama & biden! if the democrats lose, i'm outta here!)

I like the way that you expressed yourself on the subject without stating your own preference were you able to cast a vote. I imagine that comes from being a philosophy prof and inspiring others to think about matters for themselves. As for me, I think McCain had it right when he made references to our celebrity culture. Now he's found a way to cash in on it. I feel like I'm watching one of those flicks in which an attractive unknown woman achieves a position of previously unimagined power, in this case potentially the U.S. Presidency. I have in mind the actress who would play her part, but can't think of her name right now. Before Palin's nomination, I had been going back and forth between Obama and McCain. Each has assets and deficits as far as the qualities that I am looking for in our next President. McCain's choice of Palin has ended my indecision. I absolutely do not want to see this woman become President.

Since she's cut funding for special needs education, it seems particularly relevant that she's the parent of a child who will need it.

Savannah - come to Scotland and bring a bit of that Texas sunshine with you :)

Arlene - You don't have to look far to find my own political beliefs, but I don't want anyone to follow them just because I said so. The philosopher in me wants people to think things through and come to their own conclusions - blind following is the biggest crime.

Anna - I'm sure she has all the money she needs to get the education wee Trig requires...

Michael - thank you :)

Well said, Kim -- but I already had a good preview of this, didn't I?

Obama and Biden for me. The only thing I seem to have in common with Sarah Palin is a gender, and that's just not enough for me. I was amused that she made such a quick appeal to women with her references to Clinton and Ferraro. I don't believe I could find a woman more different than those two if I had a whole month to look for her.

One heartbeat away from the Presidency is too close for me. Palin made a comment that she realized she was chosen because she is a demographic. Not a good enough reason!!!!! And don't get me started about book banning.

Mary - well it was always said that Thatcher managed to destroy a lot of the advances in Feminism, desite the hopes of many. A salutory lesson...

Savannah - look forward to it :)

Wani - welcome to my ramblings!

This isn't the greatest blog post ever written - that was the last one :)

Debra - I love the way this election seems to have become Obama vs Palin. McCain seems to be pushed out of the picture somewhat...

I'm already investigating a move to Canada if McCain and Palin win. I have very little hope or respect for the intelligence of my countrymen and women, and I fear...I fear...

Kim, great post Buddy. What bothers me most is that so many people make decesions based on this personal fact or that instead of on the actual issues and record. Not going to go into the details here but you must check the facts not just what you have heard. As a point Gov Palin actually increased special education funding in Alaska. That is a fact not an opinion. Check for yourself don't just follow the other sheep. But I have not been able to get ths kind of Answers that I need to I am still with Obama. But with that said in the US all issue politics is really dealt with locally and I wish people has the same passionate opinions of their school board members.

peace dude!

Andraste - mind you, I do remember a great deal of people saying the same thing at the last election if Bush got in again...

Jeff - thanks for your input. As I've said in one form or another many times, I don't mind what people think, so long as they think :)

Very interesting blog...and the comments were very interesting too. One comment came from Andraste who said a move to Canada is being investigated. You might want to check out IDEAL-WAY.ca which is an amazing organization founded by a young man with Down syndrome. They certainly are exceptional and capable individuals.
